Description

Welcome to Economics for Kids: Lessons from Fables & Fairy Tales featuring Canberra – the capital city of Australia’s landmarks.

This book was inspired by a curious boy’s endless questions about the world, how the economy works, and my passion for making complex ideas accessible and enjoyable for children. As a mother, economist, author and educator, I’ve always believed that learning should be an adventure filled with fun, curiosity, and discovery. Economics is often seen as a topic for adults, but the truth is that kids encounter economic principles every day. Whether it’s through sharing toys, saving allowance, or deciding how to spend their birthday money. However, research shows that Australian and other OECD countries’ children’s financial literacy and economics among children remain insufficient, and there has been no significant progress since 2012 (Contreras & Bendix, 2021).

This project is not only filled with love and fun, but also with HOPE. My hope is to prepare future generations with essential life skills that are crucial for any profession. This will help them become better citizens, responsible leaders, innovative thinkers, and future entrepreneurs who will shape a brighter future in a rapidly changing and uncertain world. This fills a gap in the market where there is a shortage of engaging and fun economics books for children, while the demand for teaching economics and financial literacy at a young age continues to grow in an increasingly uncertain world.

This book is designed to introduce basic economic principles through engaging and entertaining stories from Fables and Fairy Tales that children can relate to and enjoy. Each story is carefully crafted to not only teach but also inspire young minds to think critically about the world around them. These stories are hand-picked by request of a 10-year-old boy and crafted in the Australian Capital city, so they also feature some landmarks of the town where the stories began.

Thank you for joining us on this exciting and unique educational journey.
I wish you and your children find these lessons both informative, memorable and fun!

Warm regards,
Helen Hoang, PhD
